In the heart of the wilderness, a chilling secret waits to be unearthed. Will Finch, the relentless San Francisco crime reporter, is on the hunt, and he’s about to uncover a conspiracy that could shake the nation.
Haunted by personal tragedy, Finch is determined to resurrect his life and his career. But when he’s thrust into the twisted aftermath of a multimillion-dollar bitcoin scam, he’ll realize that some stories aren’t just headlines – they’re a one-way ticket into darkness.
In the wilds of Oregon, Finch stumbles upon a cryptic crime scene: a deserted Mercedes-Benz, a wounded bear, and a town ruled by a merciless cop. And at the center of it all, the fiancée of the murder victim – a senator’s daughter who senses a sinister secret lurking in the shadows.

From the Publisher
D. F. (Don) BAILEY
D.F. Bailey’s Finch Trilogy—Bone Maker, Stone Eater, Lone Hunter—is told from the point-of-view of a crime reporter in San Francisco. Second Life became the first in a series of stand-alone novels featuring the characters introduced in the trilogy. Soon a steady stream of books followed. White Sphere, book eight in the series, is in production.
For twenty-two years Bailey worked at the University of Victoria where he taught creative writing and journalism and ran the Professional Writing Cooperative Education Program—which he co-founded. From time to time he also freelanced as a business writer and journalist. In the fall of 2010, he left the university so that, “I could turn my pre-occupation with writing into a full-blown obsession.”
His first psychological thriller, Fire Eyes, was a W.H. Smith First Novel Award finalist. A bestselling author, he’s also a ManyBooks.com Book-of-The-Month Award winner and a Whistler Independent Book Award finalist.
