What happens at the end of 1984 and how does 1984 end?
In the end, Winston give s in to the brainwashing. O’Brien told him that he would give in, that he would love Big Brother, and then he would die. And he was right. Winston didn’t even consider living the real victory. He knew he was going to die. The real victory was dying while still hating them, and he failed. The real point in this was that Orwell was saying that nobody would be safe if the world (the “real” world, not the 1984 world) continued to head in the direction it was going. Soon it was going to be too late, even for those who wanted to stand against it. Winston is a tragic hero at best. In the end, he fails, gives in, and then is killed loving Big Brother.
Who is big brother in 1984?
It’s all left intentionally vague for a reason. There might be a supreme leader of Oceania, or it may all be a ruse to get people to gather under the banner of what they’ve blown up to basically be a deity. And with the magnitude of power he wields, he might as well be considered a deity. If there is no Big Brother, then there’s likely a group of higher-ups, living comfortably, laughing at the lower class, and getting fat off of everyone else’s misery
